Turmoil and Unrest- Day 73 and 74

While this weekend was a quiet weekend at the Ruland household, it is has been anything but in our nation. I am going to start with today as I want it to be the first thing you read.

I had the pleasure of connecting with a friend from high school today through facebook messenger. He and I have been friends on FB for awhile, but we had a good conversation this morning via messenger. Let me tell you a little bit about our friendship. I met him my sophomore year in high school at the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership conference in Chicago. He was from Chicago and went to CPS. He and I were in the same small group during the conference. He and I got to be very good friends and kept in touch throughout the years. He even came to Wilmington to visit.

Today he got some horrible news. His brother and cousin both died in Chicago today. He got the phone call from his mom. He recorded a video on his facebook page that I also shared. I am super saddened by all the news right now. I am at a loss for words, but I am thinking critically. You will hear more from me as I process all that is going on.

Our weekend was pretty normal here. It is hard to share anything normal because so much of our world is not normal right now. The kids did some pet washing in the backyard. They gave the guinea pigs baths and some of the chickens. It was quite an experience. The one thing we were able to do was go kayaking yesterday. I got a kayak from my parents for Christmas. I have been so excited to try it out, so it was fun to get it out on the water. Josh and I took it out on a local lake in the forest preserve. It was a nice little outing. I am looking forward to finding other little treasures to kayak. My kayak is an inflatable 2 person kayak.

Tonight I end you with hope. I hope everyone is willing to dismantle racism. I hope that our country can come together to support one another and listen to one another. I hope that our country can change.
